The Washington Newspaper Publishers Association (WNPA) recognized The Northern Light, giving it nine second place awards at its 126th annual conference in Olympia, Wash. earlier this month.
Editor Brandy Kiger Shreve earned five of the second place awards for the following stories and photographs published during the 2012-2013 competition season:
Best Personality Profile - Short: “Blaine Unitarian congregation covenants with new minister,” which highlights Reverend Marcia Stanard’s transition to a life split between two communities.
Best Lifestyle Feature Story: “Ancient medicine offers wellness alternative” which is a story on acupuncture, its history and potential benefits.
Judge’s comments: “Strong use of detail, description and a conversational tone make this a good and informative read.”
Color Feature Photo: “A solemn anniversary,” a feature photo chronicling the September 11 celebrations at the Peace Arch.
Judge’s comments: “The framing of the soldiers is what drew us to this image.”
B&W Feature Photo: “Woof happened?” features a dog being rescued from a wrecked car by North Whatcom Fire and Rescue.
Judge’s comments: “I think the expression on the poodle is really what makes this photo work.”
Color Photo Essay: “Ringing in the New Year with Birch Bay” highlights the festivities across the community from New Year’s Eve to the Polar Bear Plunge.
Judge’s comments: “The front frame of four women is a classic celebration image full of joy and action. It is impressive. The flare lighting, balloon flame and fireworks are impressive night light images. I loved the daylight series of action water shots that scream to be enjoyed over and over.”
Graphic designer Ruth Lauman won second place for Best Special Section Cover, along with contributor Joe Meche, for Wings Over Water.
Additional second place design awards were given for the BP Bay Builders school recognition page in the Youth-Oriented section and for Kathy Stauffer/Windermere Real Estate in the Ad Campaign Single Advertiser section.
Mount Baker Experience, a special publication of The Northern Light, won second place for its summer 2013 edition in the Lifestyle/Culture Special Section.
Judge’s comments: “This was a fantastic read. The compelling first-person stories made me want to run out the door and take off for the Mt. Baker area. Photography is eye-catching as well and section is well-edited.” Credit was given to editor Ian Ferguson, graphic designer Ruth Lauman and co-publishers Pat Grubb and Louise Mugar.
The Northern Light, the weekly community newspaper for Blaine, Birch Bay and Semiahmoo, is locally published by Point Roberts Press.
