Competitors in the second annual Blaine and Birch Bay Biggest Loser competition held their initial weigh-in on January 13. The competition brought in 11 teams with a total of 41 people.
The competition is hosted by Northwest Park and Recreational District 2 (NWPRD2) and Whatcom Fitness and is aimed at making community members more conscious of healthy lifestyle choices, said event coordinator Heidi Holmes.
Each team has between two and eight members and a team leader. The teams are scored based on each team’s average weight loss. Some of the teams include the Shape Shifters, Zumba Girls, Losing it in the Bay and Scout Moms.
Community members not participating in the competition are encouraged to support their neighbors, Holmes said. The event will last eight weeks with a final weigh-out on Friday, March 7. Last year’s competition was a success, Holmes said, with one of the participants losing 13 pounds.
