Ski to Sea is an adventure race for adults, but kids needn’t miss out on all the fun. Registration is open for the annual Junior Ski to Sea events, which include a parade and a five-leg adventure race for kids.

Kids in third grade and older can participate in the Junior Ski to Sea race, which will be held on Saturday, May 17 at Lake Padden Park in Bellingham. There are three races in total: one each for elementary school kids and middle school kids and a community race. Each race has all-male, all-female and mixed divisions. Six-member teams must complete a course around Lake Padden Park in five legs. The modes of locomotion include running, three-legged running, biking, soccer and an obstacle course. 

Registration for the race costs $120 per team until Tuesday, April 15, when the fee bumps up to $150. To register, visit

The Junior Ski to Sea Parade will be held on Friday, May 16 at 6 p.m. in Bellingham. The parade starts on the corner of Cornwall and Kearney streets, continues down Cornwall and ends at the intersection of Railroad and East Champion streets.

Anyone wishing to walk or ride a bicycle in the parade can do so without registering. Registration is required for any motorized vehicle, and can be completed online at

Floats and individuals in the parade can win prizes if they catch the eyes of parade judges. Judging categories include judges’ choice, best-decorated bike, best small float, best large float, best novelty, best walking group, best pet and the grand prize. 

Participants will begin staging at 4:30 p.m. and judging will begin at the same time.
