Some Birch Bay residents’ cell service could improve if Verizon Wireless gets the go-ahead to build a new cell tower in Birch Bay. Birch Bay Water and Sewer District (BBWSD) commissioners discussed leasing a plot of land near Kickerville Road to Verizon at their March 14 meeting.
The tower would only provide cell service for Verizon customers, said BBWSD general manager Dan Eisses. The tower would also have the capacity to provide service for two other cell providers, which would have to pay Verizon for the access.
The board has been in deliberation over the past few months, negotiating prices with the cellphone company and considering whether the benefit to the district would be worth the possibility of upsetting locals, who might be opposed to the tower’s construction.
“They’re currently offering $1,250 per month,” Eisses said. “We’re still in negotiation, but that number probably won’t change.”
In order to construct the towers, Verizon would have to go through the county permitting process which would require a public hearing.
