Correction, July 10, 2014: This detour applies to the Skagit River bridge, not the Nooksack River bridge.
Construction crews began detouring nighttime traffic around the Nooksack River bridge on I-5 on July 7.
Southbound traffic will be rerouted down George Hopper Road from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. through July 14. All southbound traffic will be reduced to one lane only beginning at 8:30 p.m. Closures and detours will not be in effect on Saturday, July 12.
Additionally, southbound I-5 will have nightly single-lane closures from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. from July 14 to July 21, with the exception of Saturday, July 19.
Northbound I-5 will have single-lane closures through July 14. Northbound traffic will be rerouted at East College Way from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. from July 14 to July 21, with the exception of July 19.
The detours are necessary to allow construction crews to finish painting the parts of the bridge that were reinforced last fall. The new layers of paint will protect the steel from the elements and prevent corrosion.
