The Blaine branch of the Boys & Girls Club of Whatcom County will be changing its schedule in response to the upcoming start of the school year.
The club, which has more than 500 members from Blaine and Birch Bay, has been maintaining summer hours, Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., since April. With the start of the new school year, the club’s hours will be pared down to allow school activities to take precedence.
The club will be closed completely for two weeks, from Monday, August 25 to Friday, September 5, to allow kids to acclimate to their new school schedule. Normal hours will resume on Monday, September 8, from 2:30 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.
The Blaine Boys & Girls Club will be closed before school, and it will not be open for late start days or teacher in-service days. On scheduled early release days, the club will still open at 12:30 p.m. but will close at 5:30 p.m., as opposed to the usual 7 p.m.
The hours may be a little more limited, but the club will still be running its popular sports programs throughout the fall and winter seasons. Practice for tackle football is already underway, with games expected to start in early September and end in late October. Flag football practice will begin in early September.
Also beginning in early September is the indoor volleyball league practice. The first volleyball game will take place on Monday, September 15; the season goes until October 27.
In early November, the basketball teams will begin their practices, with games scheduled through February. The club will host co-ed games for kindergarten and first grade, and have separate boys and girls leagues for kids from second through eighth grade.
