Council debates critical areas ordinance
After a heated debate Monday, Blaine City Council postponed their vote on a critical areas ordinance revision to allow more time for public comment and review.
Border lane closure extended through May 22
The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) is extending for a third week the temporary closure of the right northbound lane of the current two-lane detour through the Peace Arch Land Port of Entry.
Council approves ward redistricting
In a special meeting May 4, Blaine City Council voted 5-0 to approve an ordinance that would create new voting ward boundaries for the city of Blaine.

The 12th annual Bike To Work And School Day in Whatcom County is scheduled for Friday, May 15.

Westman Marine puts finishing touches on Alaska seiner
“It’s nice to see a new state-of-the-art Alaska Limit seiner,” said Bob Gudmundson of Westman Marine as he stood back to admire the 58-foot steel hulled Intangible taking shape in his yard. “There was a 20 year stretch where not many new fishing boats were made,” he said.

Free tax workshop for small businesses

Swine flu update
On Tuesday, the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) confirmed nine cases of the H1N1 (swine) influenza in Washington state. Although there are no confirmed Whatcom County cases, Whatcom County Health Department is implementing a plan to receive and distribute its Strategic National Stockpile (SNS) allocation of antiviral medications.
Mother’s Day art events this weekend
Blaine will have two art shows this coming Mother’s Day weekend along with new releases and tastings at six Whatcom County wineries, including Blaine’s Dakota Creek Winery and the GLM Winery, home of the Glacial Lake Missoula label. Even the weather reports are promising.

Blaine students earn top ranks at state
Blaine high school’s Michelle Berry, Nichole Munden, Jacqui Meaker, and Alexandra Dolk competed in the 2009 W.I.A.A. State Solo/Ensemble competition in Ellensburg. They won their category in the local San Juan Music Educator's Association Solo Competition January 31 in Bellingham competing against other musicians from all high school classification.

The Whatcom County-based Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association (NSEA) received the 2009 Volunteer Organization of the Year Award at the Washington-British Columbia Chapter of the American Fisheries Society annual general meeting (April 20-23, Shelton.)
