Blaine
scrambles past Ferndale
It
was ugly, but well take it, Blaine boys head
basketball coach Dan Rucker said, commenting on the Borderites
39-35 non-conference win over Ferndale on December 6 at
the Big Orange.
It
was a bit ugly, but it was also quite exciting. Played without
benefit of a shot clock, it was very like a 1950s game with
squeaking sneakers, quick passes and dashes, plenty of running
and keep-away and an excess of downed players grasping at
and grabbing for the ball in a foes unfriendly
fingers.
Blaine
led 13-6 after Q1 and were up 20-12 with three minutes left
in the half before Ferndale went on a 10-2 rampage, outscoring
the Bs 16-9 in Q2 to make it 22-22 at the half. Blaine
outscored Ferndale 13-7 in Q3 to go into Q4 with a six-point
lead.
Blaine
scored only four points, all on free throws, in Q4; but
the Bs tenacious defense and ball-controlling offense
kept Ferndale scoreless for more than four minutes before
the Es went on a six-point tear to come within two
of Blaine with 1:18 left.
With
the game up for grabs, Blaine grabbed control, blanking
Ferndale the rest of the way. Cody Boyd, Ferndales
6-8 center and leading scorer with 11 points, fouled out,
taking the Es top scoring threat off the floor with
less than a minute left. A timely Cory Crews rebound
and two successful free throws by Ryan Pike cinched it for
the Bs.
Stats-wise,
Crews and Keith Williams scored 10 points each for Blaine.
Pike added 8; Skyler Anderson, 7 and Brendan Mulholland,
4. The games most significant statistic may have been
Ferndale shooting 0-for-10 from trey territory.
The
Double Bs play Lynden Christian at 7:30 p.m. on December
14 at LC and host Sultan at 7 p.m. December 18 at the Big
Orange. .

Ladies
win, too
Ferndale beat Blaine 48-36 in shots from the floor, edged
the Lady Bs in treys 1-0 and committed four fewer
turnovers, but after that, the Lady Bs out-tallied
the Golden Eagles in stat after stat, while defeating the
Lady Es 50-39 in non-conference basketball on December
7 at Ferndale.
Blaines
Jessica Summers won the battle of the 6-foot sophomores,
topping Ferndales Liz McCarrell, who came into the
game with a 33.7 ppg average, in points 22-21 and rebounds
11-7. The remaining Lady Bs Kristina Francis
8, Shela Robertson 6, Kimberly Harmening 5, Becky Riddle
4, Linsey Taylor 3 and Jaclyn Hendrickson 2 outscored
their Lady E counterparts 28-18 and also out-rebounded their
Golden Eagle peers 28-21.
The
Lady Bs granite ingrained discipline led to Blaines
committing only 20 fouls to Ferndales 30.
One
key difference between the Bs and Es was Blaines
smart bomb style of shooting. The Lady Bs hit 59 percent
(26/44) from the foul line and 33 percent (12/36) from the
field. The Es accuracy averages were of lesser extent
43 percent (10/23) on foul shots, 28 percent (14/51)
on field attempts. Even if Ferndale had equalled Blaines
twine-twitching accuracy, the Golden Eagles would have only
accumulated eight more points, and still lost.
The
game was close until the final quarter. Blaine lead 11-8,
21-18 and 32-28 before breaking away with an 18-11 final
quarter surge.
The
Lady Bs host Lynden Christian at 7 p.m. on December
13 and take on the Turks in Sultan on December 18. Back
