Glahn, Terris rule the mats
Short-handed
Blaine was edged 36-33 by Meridian in a dual NCC wrestling
meet at Laurel on January 16.
Blaine
won six of seven weights (five via pins) in which the Borderites
were able to enter a competitor. The Trojans won five weights
by forfeit, two by double forfeit and one by a pin.
Blaines
Tyler Glahn won a 9-2 major decision over Lyndens
Lorenzo Rodriquez to win the 125-lb. title at the Lynden
Invitational on January 19. Borderite Anthony Terris finished
third at 215 lbs.

Dry
grad fundraisers set
Parents
of the Blaine high school senior class of 2002 are rolling
right along with fundraisers for a drug- and alcohol-free
graduation party.
Volunteers are gathering orders for Valentines Day chocolates.
Solid chocolate CDs for $3 and chocolate boxes filled with
chocolate covered peanuts, almonds and coffee beans for
$8 are the handiwork of local chocolate maker Totally Chocolate.
Orders will be delivered by February 8.
For
the next holiday, the group will be selling Easter lilies
starting February 15. For information or to place orders
call Sheila Connors at 332-2740.

Blaine
boys ranked second in state
The Blaine boys basketball team, ranked No. 2 in the state
in the Associated Press high school boys basketball poll,
defeated Meridian 46-33 in NCC boys basketball action at
Laurel on January 15.
The
Borderites (11-1 overall, 7-1 NCC) trail Lynden Christian
(9-2 overall, 8-0 NCC), who are ranked fifth in state, by
a game.
Blaine
rallied from a two-point deficit at halftime to outscore
Meridian 27-12 in the second half. They were led by Keith
Williams (15 points, 9 assists), Ryan Pike (10 rebounds,
8 points) and Jake Gilmore (11 points).
The
Double Bs host Lynden Christian in a crucial contest
on January 24 at 7:30 p.m. In their last encounter the Lyncs
edged the Borderites 55-53 at LC. The outcome of their second
get-together could decide who finishes first in the NCC.
The
Borderites play the Turks in Sultan on January 29.

Summers
shines as Blaine tops Meridian
Blaine (9-3 overall, 7-1 NCC) defeated Meridian 50-30 (2-9
overall, 1-6 NCC) in North Cascades Conference girls basketball
action on January 15 at the Big Orange.
Jessica
Summers led the Lady Bs with 19 points, 7 rebounds
and 6 steals. Anna Sticklin added 6 rebounds, 5 points and
3 steals. Kristina Francis got 3 steals and 10 points, going
5-for-8 on deuce attempts.
The
Lady Bs face Lynden Christian on January 25 at 7:30
p.m. at LC and play Sultan on January 29 at 7 p.m. at the
Big Orange. The date for South Whidbeys game at Blaine
has been changed from February 1 to January 31.
