Blaine to host game Dec. 13

Blaine high school will be the site for a boys basketball game Thursday, December 13, between White Rock Christian of Surrey, B.C., and Grant High of Portland, Oregon. Tipoff is at 7:30 p.m., with tickets $5 at the door.

Grant is the top-ranked Class 6A team in Oregon. White Rock Christian is rated fourth among AAA teams in British Columbia and has all but one player returning from last year’s fourth-place B.C. finishers. Grant features all-state senior point guard Paul McCoy and highly recruited center Mike Moser.

16 players make All-Northwest conference football team

Blaine placed 16 players on the all-northwest conference football team, second only to Burlington-Edison’s 22. Running back Ben Bohnson and linebacker Shane Hicks were named to the first team, and offensive lineman Bryan Chau was named to the second team. Receiving honorable mention were linemen Vince Phelps, Cole Avery, Cody Dobbs, Ryan Ingalls and Jordan Craig; backs Shayne Moore, Freddy Johncox, Justin Kirkwood and Alex Bresnan; running back Casey McCabe, quarterback Daniel Gorze, wide receiver Trevor Chau and kicker/punter Patrick the Automatic Mulholland. Phelps (linebacker) and Bresnan (wide receiver) both received honorable mention.

Blaine grapplers fifth at Battle at the Border

Blaine finished in a tie for fifth place at the annual Battle of the Border last weekend with a score of 122.5, just four points off fourth place Ferndale and tied with Black Hills High School in the 24-team tournament, considered by many to be tougher than the state tournament.

Four Borderites got into the semi-finals where Blaine’s Jacob Humphrey (119) lost to Kentwood’s Brandon Rogers 15-5, Jesse Kilthau (145) lost to Vashon’s Alex Steamboat 12-2, Shafer Hicks (160) was pinned by Steilacoom’s Jordan Flynn and Blaine’s Shane Hicks (215) defeated Beamer’s David Sulivan 17-0. Selah’s Dan Escamilla pinned Hicks in the 215-pound final.
