Spencer is new basketball coach

Former assistant coach Chris Spencer will take over the reins of Blaine’s basketball program next season replacing 15-year veteran Dan Rucker. Spencer, 26, assisted for Rucker from 2005 through 2008.
Spencer is a 2001 graduate of Ferndale High School, a program that faced Blaine’s Luke Ridnour during Spencer’s first three years. Ridnour led the Borderites to back-to-back state championships in 1999 and 2000.

Boys, girls finish well at subs

The Blaine girls track team took third and the boys got a fourth place finish at last weekend’s sub-district track and field meet. This is quite an accomplishment in what’s become known as the toughest 2A league in the state in producing both boys and girls state champion track teams for the last two years running. Twenty-one Blaine athletes will be at the district meet.

The finals portion of this year’s 2A district meet (except for the boys 1600) begins Friday, May 22 at 3:30 at Civic Stadium in Bellingham.

The top four finishers in each event go on to state meet, set for May 29 and 30 at Mt. Tahoma high school in Tacoma.
