Cross country: Borderites rank in top five at meet

Members of Blaine’s boys’ and girls’ cross country teams ranked in the top five at Blaine’s first home meet of the season at Peace Arch State Park last week.

Runners from Anacortes, Nooksack and Squalicum high schools traveled to Peace Arch State Park on Wednesday, September 15, to compete against Blaine. A light drizzle was the only weather that accompanied the athletes.

For Blaine’s boys’ team, sophomore Eddie Fontes finished in fifth place with a time of 18 minutes, 2 seconds in the 5K race.

Sophmore Patrick Gibson of Squalicum high school placed first for the boys with a time of 17:32.

Three of the four Blaine cross country girls ran in Wednesday’s race, with two finishing in the top five. Senior Cassidy Hill secured fourth place with 22:23 while junior Kiersten Sigfusson finished in fifth with a time of 22:52.

The third of Blaine’s girls in the race, Megan Schmidt, finished in nineteenth with a time of 26:23.

Sophomore Brittany Gappa, also from Squalicum, placed first for the girls with 20:16.

In the South Whidbey Invitational at South Whidbey Island on Saturday, Blaine’s boys’ team placed fifth overall in the Division 2 varsity 5K race with a total time of 1 hour, 35 minutes, 54 seconds. Fontes came in fifth in this event with a time of 17:58.
