The Mount Baker Mountaineers may have taken first place at last weekend’s sub regional wrestling tournament at Squalicum high school, but their performance did not stop the Borderites from securing a third place overall finish and advancing 10 wrestlers to regional competition this coming weekend.
Five Borderites made it to the final rounds in their respective weight classes, while an additional five placed high enough to advance. The top four wrestlers from each weight class moved on to this weekend’s tournament at Lynden high school.
Robert Campos of Burlington-Edison, who finished second overall, defeated Borderite Kelton Nix in the 125-pound final. In the 135-pound class, Bellingham’s Andrew Peterson pinned Blaine’s Shaypher Hendricks.
Two of Blaine’s heavyweights, Caleb Johnson at 215 and Michael Antczak at 285, made it to their classes’ final rounds, but were defeated by Sehome’s Joey Peach and Mount Baker’s Alec Postlewait, respectively.
The Borderites will travel to Lynden on Saturday, February 12, for the regional tournament.
