Cross country standouts Parker Morris and Killary Kiele both ran the best 5ks of their respective careers in the Northwest Conference (NWC) Championship meet at Sehome October 24.
After going on to earn a top-20 finish in the Westside Classic November 2, Morris will represent Blaine at the state meet at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco on Saturday, November 9.
Morris, a sophomore, will run at the state level for the second time in his high school career.
“That’s a great accomplishment on his part,” said cross country coach Cary Bacon.
Kiele, a junior, led the Blaine girls team at the NWC Championship meet. She crushed her previous 5k record by 37.1 seconds, with a time of 19:52.5 – good for 24th place. Hannah Keene and Delaney Nelson also put forth personal bests, with times of 21:04.1 and 23:01.4 respectively.
Leading the Blaine boys team, Morris ran a time of 17:37.30, besting his previous 5k record by 13.28 seconds. Greg Arps ran his personal best of 19:05.3, and Alex Dodge ticked a personal best of 19:52.2.
At the Westside Classic at Lakes High School November 2, Morris placed 19th with a time of 17:50.58. His top-20 finish earned him a bid to the state meet.
“We knew he was in the mix going into the race,” Bacon said. “He was up against some tough competition but he pulled it off.”
Kean led the girls team at the Westside Classic with a time of 21:56.65, earning 42nd place.
Bacon said everyone on the team was running their best at the end of the season, which is something every coach expects and hopes to see.
“We had a great finish to the year for such a small team,” Bacon said.
He added that Morris is hoping to run a sub-18-minute race at the state meet.
