Known as a humorous storyteller with a fancy for cigars, former congressman Al Swift has died.

According to a press release from the U.S. House of Representatives, Swift passed away on April 20 of natural causes at age 82. From the time he was elected to the U.S. House in 1978 and until he retired in 1994, he represented Washington’s 2nd congressional district.

“Al Swift served Washington state with distinction and honor,” said representative Rick Larsen (WA-02). “He was a trusted friend and invaluable mentor to me during my time in congress.”

Swift, a Democrat, was known for his advocacy of voter rights and environmental protections.

“Beyond what he meant to me personally, Al Swift meant so much to so many of the people he represented,” said representative Derek Kilmer (WA-06). “Whether he was advocating for the economic needs of the Olympic Peninsula or working on infrastructure issues for the entire country, Al was the consummate public servant ... On behalf of my entire family, I can say that I will miss Al but I’m glad he’s now with Paula.”

Swift is survived by his daughters Amy (Dan) Donovan and Lauri Swift as well as three grandchildren and one great grandson. His wife, Paula, passed away in 2012.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 5 in Virginia. The family intends to hold a service in Washington state late this summer.
