Deadline to file for state, county office is May 18

If running for state or county office piques your interest, now’s the time to commit.

Candidate filing week is Monday, May 14 to Friday, May 18. During that time, individuals can issue a declaration of candidacy online at bit.ly/2Jfu3Ph or in person at the Whatcom County Auditor’s Office, located at 311 Grand Avenue Suite 103 in Bellingham.

Here are a few of the key offices that are up for election in 2018: U.S. senator; U.S. representative, District 1; state representative, position 1 and 2 in District 42; state senator, District 42; prosecuting attorney, Whatcom County; district court judge, position 1 and 2 in Whatcom County; Whatcom County Council, at-large position; state supreme court justice, position 2, 8 and 9; and court of appeals judge, serving Island, San Juan, Skagit and Whatcom Counties.

Mailed declarations of candidacy, along with filing fees, will be accepted by the county auditor’s office starting on Monday, April 30. Filing fees vary per position and must be submitted on time.

“Any filing received before April 30 or after the deadline will be rejected and returned to the candidate,” according to an April 23 statement from the Whatcom County Auditor’s Office.
