Whether they’re millennials or baby boomers, homeowners are spending money on renovations.

According to an annual survey of residential remodeling conducted by Houzz, first-time buyers spent an average $33,800 on home renovations in 2016, which is an increase of 22 percent from 2015; older homeowners spent approximately three times that amount during the same period.

Close to home, residential construction company Design Builders, LLC has been busy revamping homes in Blaine and Birch Bay. The firm specializes in additions, large to small, and offers architectural design services, project planning, permitting and construction management.

Owner Mark Hicks said his company recently transformed a small two-bedroom, one-bathroom home in Birch Bay into a three-bedroom, two-bathroom home with a master bedroom and bathroom upstairs.

Hicks said the owner’s father built the home in the 1950s and it had been used as a family vacation property since then.

The home now features heated tile floors, a gas fireplace, granite countertops and a custom tile shower and cabinets.
