Grant applications being accepted by the city

The Blaine Tourism Advisory Committee (BTAC) is accepting grant applications for new and ongoing projects that will help bolster tourism in the city. Applications are due by 4 p.m. on Friday, August 3.

“Events are big in our small town thanks to the many organizations and volunteers who plan these special events and activities in our community,” said Blaine community development and tourism coordinator Debbie Harger in a press release.

“Many of these events have received financial support through the annual grant program offered by the city of Blaine,” she said.

Funding for the grants comes from the lodging tax, which is paid by guests at hotels and motels in Blaine. Last year, the city allocated a combined $86,750 in lodging tax revenue to such events as Hands Across the Border, Blaine’s Old Fashioned Fourth of July and Drayton Harbor Days.

The grant funding can be used to market and operate events and festivals in Blaine that attract tourists from at least 50 miles away or from out of the country, according to the press release.

To be eligible for the grant, applicants must demonstrate past fundraising attempts and have a goal of becoming self-sufficient.

To apply, complete an application form and submit it to Harger by email at dharger@cityofblaine.com or in person at Blaine City Hall, 435 Martin Street Suite 3000 Blaine, WA  98230.

To view the grant application, visit cityofblaine.com or pick one up at Blaine City Hall.
