State senator Sharon Shewmake (D-Bellingham) sponsored a resolution honoring the Sikh community for Vaisakhi festival that the senate passed on April 14.

Vaisakhi celebrates the spring harvest and the beginning of the New Year in northern India. Vaisakhi, held in mid-April, is one of the most religiously significant days in Sikh history.

“The Sikh community has been an incredibly open and hospitable community where I live in Whatcom County,” Shewmake said in her floor speech on April 14. “This is a very unique holiday where it’s all about equality. It’s about making sure that we’re recognizing the humanitarian work of the Sikh community, but also the humanity in all of us. And I’m so thankful that this community has been in America, in the world, but also in my hometown.”

Whatcom County Executive Satpal Sidhu was among the dozens in attendance to watch lawmakers pass Senate Resolution 8638 in Olympia.
