Updated: Preliminary August 3 primary results

An estimated 27.7 percent of eligible Whatcom County voters submitted ballots in the August 3 primary election. About 44,000 votes were counted by 5 p.m. August 4, with approximately 8,000 left to count.

The results are up-to-date as of the afternoon of August 5. Results can change until they are certified on August 17.

For the Blaine City Council Ward 2 Position 4 seat, Rhyan Lopez was ahead of Colin Hawkins 54.3 percent (217 votes) to 37.3 percent (149 votes). Steven Tojek, who had 8.3 percent of the votes, is not expected to advance to the general election in November.

The Blaine City Council Ward 3 Position 6 seat was a squeaker, with Barbara Sturdivant ahead 37 percent (237 votes), Eric Davidson receiving 32.3 percent (207 votes) and Jennifer Plombon with 30.4 percent (195) of the votes.

The proposed levy for fire protection district 21, also known as North Whatcom Fire and Rescue, received more votes against the levy at 52.6 percent (3,611), opposed to the 47.4 percent (3,252) of people who voted in favor.
