Updated: Thursday storm batters Birch Bay Drive

Posted
A windstorm and high tide pushed water over the roadway at Birch Bay Drive on Thursday, December 20. As a result of the storm, which impacted all of Whatcom County, county executive Jack Louws approved a Whatcom County Local Proclamation of Emergency. "While all of Whatcom County has been affected by this event, hardest hit was Birch Bay where significant road damage has occurred and roads remain closed until further notice. At least one business was destroyed in Birch Bay," according to a statement from deputy director of the Whatcom County Sheriff's Office division of emergency management John Gargett.
He continued, "Until damage to the roads can be determined, Birch Bay Drive between Harborview and Shintaffer will remain closed. Crews from Whatcom County Public Works were able last night to clear enough debris to enable emergency vehicles through on the east side of the road."
