Let the races begin! The Whatcom County Auditor's Office has mailed out and  posted on its website the 2011 primary election voters' guide. The primary elections will be held Tuesday, August 16, and the ballots will be mailed out on Friday, July 29 (two days from now).

Only the candidates for Whatcom County Executive and county sheriff will appear on the countywide ballot. Residents of Ferndale and Bellingham will also see the candidates for the cities' respective mayors. The primary will whittle down each position's field to two candidates who will then face off in the general election in November. Blaine City Hall will house a ballot drop box on August 16.

The four candidates for county executive are: former county public works district 1 general manager Tom Anderson, current state representative state senator Doug Ericksen (R-Ferndale), former Lynden mayor and current Birch Bay resident Jack Louws and former county planning director David Stalheim. Current county executive Pete Kremen will not seek another term but has announced he will be running for the county council position currently held by Tony Larson. The Birch Bay Steering Committee and The Northern Light are hosting a county executive candidate forum starting at 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 28, at Birch Bay Bible Community Church, 7039 Jackson Road in Birch Bay. Anderson, Louws and Stalheim are scheduled to be there.

The three candidates for county sheriff are: current sheriff Bill Elfo, sheriff's office detective Steve Harris and sheriff's deputy Bob Taylor. Click each of the candidates' last names for their respective candidate registration forms.

Fun fact (though many who live in Blaine or Birch Bay probably already know it): Elfo used to be the police chief for the Blaine Police Department. Mike Haslip, Blaine's current police chief, is on Elfo's re-election committee and has donated $100 so far to Elfo's campaign.
