Today is the last day to postmark or drop off ballots for the Blaine school district maintenance and operations levy and capital projects bond special election.

Ballots can be dropped off at the drop box just outside the Blaine public library before 8 p.m. today, Tuesday, February 14. The library is located at 610 3rd Street. For a complete list of ballot drop sites, click here.

Election results for the February 14 elections will be posted here. The Whatcom County Auditor expects the first results to be posted by 8:30 tonight.

With voter approval, Blaine school district’s maintenance and operations levy would rise to $1.62 per $1,000 in 2013, increasing to $1.68 for 2016. The levy accounts for roughly 24 percent of district’s funding and needs a simply majority to pass.

The capital projects bond, however, needs a supermajority of 60 percent or more to pass. The capital bond request being offered to voters is drastically reduced from the previous $32 million bond request that failed in April of last year by less than 1 percent of the vote.

The Blaine school board pared the bond initiative down to $3 million that would be used to fund only the most-needed upgrades to school facilities. Approximately $2.4 million will be used to upgrade the science facilities from one lab room to six. The remaining funds will be used for special education, security, heating and lighting upgrades.
