BP officials have announced plans to start the Cherry Point refinery’s spring maintenance work early in an effort to reduce downtime while repairs are made.

In a press release, BP Cherry Point Refinery manager Stacey McDaniel said the maintenance work will be combined with repairs to damages sustained in the February 17 fire that struck the refinery’s crude vacuum unit, one of the first steps in the oil refining process. The scheduled maintenance work is expected to last until April.

The maintenance work will mean extra workers on hand, which will most likely translate to heavier traffic around the refinery. McDaniel expects traffic to be heaviest on Grandview Road between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. and between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. Local residents are advised to avoid Grandview near the refinery at these times, if possible.

McDaniel said local residents will be kept updated on the status of the maintenance and repair work. For more information, contact the refinery ay www.bpcherrypoint.com or call 360-371-1500.
