Whatcom County Sheriff’s officers are investigating a rash of break-ins in the Bay Crest housing development in Birch Bay.

Whatcom County undersheriff Jeff Parks said the sheriff’s office has received calls about 24 burglaries in the Bay Crest community, between Alderson and Bay roads, within the past month. Parks said the burglaries appear to be targeting the homes in Bay Crest and are more than just random occurrences.

The sheriff’s department is currently investigating the string of burglaries, but Parks declined to offer details on these efforts. He confirmed Birch Bay neighborhood sheriff’s deputy Zac Reimer and others are aggressively tracking down leads in the case.

“We certainly intend to find out who it is and apprehend them,” Parks said.

The Bay Crest Plat Association sent out an email alert earlier in the month warning residents of the break-ins. The alert said the burglaries have typically occurred between 11:30 p.m. and 3 a.m., several times while the residents were sleeping. Property has been stolen both from inside garages and from front porches and backyards, according to the alert.

Ginny Benton, president of the Bay Crest Plat Association Board of Directors, declined to comment on the break-ins until she could consult with the sheriff’s office.

Parks said residents of the Bay Crest community should take the normal precautions against burglary, namely locking doors and securing valuables in a safe place. He said he is not aware of any arrests made related to the burglaries, but assured residents updates in the case will be disseminated to the community.
