Helen Louise (Gienandt) Mugar

Helen Louise (Gienandt) Mugar, 93, of Gloucester, Mass., passed away peacefully in her home on December 7, 2014. Formerly of Belmont, MA andMarco Island, FL, Helen was born in Boston in 1921 to Fritz L. and Elizabeth Romberg Gienandt. She was the loving wife of John Martin Mugar, to whom she was married for more than 60 years. He predeceased her in 2007.
Helen graduated from Dover High School in New Hampshire, attended Simmons College and graduated from the School of Nursing at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital. She went on to become head nurse of its male surgical ward.
In 1943, Helen joined the Navy Nurse Corps and served as an officer in Portsmouth, NH, where she met her husband, John, also an officer in the Navy. She then went overseas to serve in the Pacific Theatre in New Guinea and retired from the Navy in 1946 as a Lt. JG.
Throughout Helen’s life, she was an avid gardener and lover of nature and art. In her later years she particularly enjoyed touring the Pacific Northwest and visiting her property in Point Roberts, WA.
She was predeceased by her sister Betty Streit. She was the loving mother of Elizabeth Eveillard and her husband, Jean-Marie, of New York City, Martin Mugar and his wife, Alix, of Durham, N.H, Ellen Mugar of Cape Elizabeth, ME, and Louise Grubb and her husband, Patrick, of Point Roberts, WA. She dearly loved her grandchildren, Suzanne and Pauline Eveillard, Gabriel and Eve Mugar, Lydia Clements, and Andrew and Alexandra Grubb. She is also
survived by Gabriel Mugar’s wife, Anda French, and Pauline Eveillard’s husband, Douglas Gould.
Interment took place December 15 at Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, MA.
