A 47-year-old man is being held in Whatcom County Jail in lieu of a $350,000 appearance bond after stabbing another man multiple times at a bar in downtown Blaine.
Edward Lee Castillo, 46, of Blaine, was charged with first-degree assault following a fight that broke out around 7:30 p.m. August 1 in the 700 block of Peace Portal Drive, according to the affidavit of probable cause filed in Whatcom County Superior Court.
Blaine Police Department officers responded to an assault with a deadly weapon in the alley behind the bar and found a 48-year-old Custer resident with stab wounds, court records show. Witnesses were applying pressure to the victim’s injuries left of his neck above the collar bone, his upper lip and his left hip.
One witness told police Castillo tried talking to the victim and him. After saying they didn’t want to speak, Castillo pulled out a knife with a finger ring and began stabbing the victim. The witness said he punched Castillo, who then fled the scene by motorcycle. Castillo was identified by other people at the bar, and first responders transported the victim to the hospital.
A PeaceHealth spokesperson did not respond to an information request on whether the victim, who is not being named, was treated at St. Joseph Medical Center in Bellingham, and if so, what that care included.
Castillo’s public defender, Sydney Miyahara, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Castillo was booked into jail on August 5. His arraignment was scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Friday, August 15.
