With loving memories of days gone by, we recall the life of Rodney “Rod” Allen Pullar. Born to Gordon & Florence Pullar in Bellingham on Feb. 5, 1932, Rod passed away in Bellingham on Sept. 8, 2014 at the age of 82.
Rod was a 1950 graduate of Bellingham High School and spent 8 years in the U.S. Navy and was a Korean War-era veteran. He served as a “survival instructor” at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station where he helped train new pilots in survival techniques. He later served on the submarine, U.S.S. Redfish.
Rod returned to college while in his 40s and earned a bachelor’s degree from Western Washington University. He was an accomplished woodcarver and his life-size depiction of a sasquatch was on display at WWU for many years. Rod loved the outdoors, worked as a logger, and enjoyed hunting, prospecting for gold and searching for the remains of old prospectors’ cabins.
Rod is survived by 3 children, Roderick of Bellingham, Daniel of Idaho and Deborah of California. He also leaves behind 2 brothers, Archie of Burlington and Gordon of Anchorage, as well as 3 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
