10-digit dialing goes into effect at the end of July

Local calls made in Washington will require 10-digit dialing starting July 29, according to the Washington State Utilities and Transportation Commission. The change impacts customers in the 206, 253, 360 and 425 area codes.

The change is in response to a new area code. The new code, 564, will go into effect August 28 and is being created due to projections that the 360 area code will run out of numbers in 2018.

New numbers may be assigned to the 564 area code as soon as August 28.
