Mike McFarlane will be hanging up his running shoes after a long stretch as Whatcom County Parks and Recreation director. His expected day of departure will be June 21. The county is hoping a successor can begin work by June 6 in order to facilitate a smooth turnover.

Applications were accepted until April 18 with interviews scheduled for the week of May 2. According to Whatcom County community outreach facilitator Jed Holmes, the county has received 25 applications for the job. Approximately 25 people work in the parks department in positions running the gamut from park ranger to accountants. The department oversees 16,000 acres of land comprised of 74 parcels, which include natural areas, parks, campgrounds, historic buildings and 67 miles of trails. It also manages or funds eight senior centers, a community center and a gun range.

Depending upon experience, the successful candidate can expect a salary ranging from $115,668 to $156,516 per annum.
