Shaun Ferris Ward
October 8, 1965–March 19, 2025
Shaun Ferris Ward, born on October 8, 1965, in Salt Lake City, Utah, passed away on March 19, 2025, in Lynden, WA after an 18-month battle from oligodendroglioma, a type of cancerous brain tumor. His passing marks the end of a life dedicated to service, leadership, and family.
Shaun’s journey into public service began in 1999 when he joined Fire District 8. What started as a passion quickly evolved into a distinguished career. In 2007, Shaun became a full-time firefighter with North Whatcom Fire and Rescue and was promoted just a year later to lieutenant. His commitment and leadership continued to shine as he rose to the position of shift captain in 2011 and ultimately division chief of special services in 2022. Throughout his career, Shaun played an instrumental role in shaping the future of the fire service by mentoring new recruits at the fire academy—helping others discover their own calling in the field that meant so much to him. Despite his cancer, Shaun continued to work tirelessly until retiring in 2024.
Shaun’s legacy extends beyond his professional accomplishments. He was a devoted father and papa who cherished time with his family. Shaun is survived by his daughter Brittney and her husband Levi Jansen; grandchildren Savannah (Colby), Tatum, Brooklynn, Axton Wiebe, and Tinsley Jansen. He is also survived by his father Ferris Ward of Utah and mother Joyce Peterson of Oregon.
Shaun was preceded in death by his beloved wife of nearly 30 years, Pamela—a partnership that stood as a testament to enduring love and support. He was also predeceased by step-parents Matilda Ward of Utah and Jack Peterson of Oregon.
A memorial service honoring Shaun’s life will be held in Lynden, WA on May 31, 2025 at 1 p.m. at North County Christ the King.
