Michael Shepard’s four-vote lead held and he will advance to the November general election in the race for state senator of the 42nd Legislative District, according to the results of a hand recount.

Conducted by Whatcom County elections staff starting on Tuesday, Aug. 25, the recount was triggered by the slim margin between Shepard and Eamonn Collins for the second spot on the ballot.

Shepard received 13,125 votes to Collins’ 13,121 votes in the August primary, the recount confirmed. Both are Bellingham Democrats.

Shepard, a Port of Bellingham commissioner and Western Washington University professor, will face Republican Erika Creydt, a Blaine School Board member and clinical psychologist, who received 22,125 votes.
