Wouldn’t it be nice if the trains didn’t blow their horns at Marine Drive in Blaine?

Apparently it’s possible and would even be safer by having BNSF add another set of crossing arms, at an approximate cost of $650k.

This information comes from one of BNSF’s employees.

If you’d like to know if this would be worthwhile, just ask most everyone who lives within half a mile of this crossing, especially those in the old Delmonte Hotel and the folks who live in the harbor on their boats.

It is my opinion, but maybe we can have this project be part of the restoration of the historic 1908 depot, when WSDOT announces a new stop in 2017.

My feelings are, we just might get the heads up on a new depot. Am I being a bit optimistic? Of course, but that is the only alternative I can live with. The other alternative, being pessimistic, certainly doesn’t work.

I’m just putting it out there, and perhaps some conversations can work themselves up the food chain, and we can have a safer, less noisy and bustling Amtrak Depot here in the near future.

Do it now or forever wish you had! Happy spring everyone!

The Editor:

Every year, on the last Saturday of April, groups all over the world gather at 10 a.m. to practice Tai Chi and Qigong. In doing so, a peaceful energy is created that circles the planet, time zone by time zone.

I would like to extend my gratitude and appreciation to all those who attended (in person or in spirit) World Tai Chi and Qigong Day in Birch Bay this past Saturday. I would especially like to thank Heidi Holmes and the Blaine-Birch Bay Park and Recreation District 2 for sponsoring our event as well as all those who donated to help make this event possible. To 8-year-old swordsman Colton Stewart, thank you for being the highlight of the day!

I hope to see you and your family again at World Tai Chi Day 2017. One world, one breath.
